Movie Review: DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

Let’s cut right to it. If you were amused by the first 2 Deadpool films, then you are looking forward to DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE. If you aren’t, then you’re not. And…that’s fine for DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE gives you EXACTLY what you were expecting – inappropriate humor, decent enough action and plenty of cameos. Nourishment for those that enjoyed the earlier Deadpool films and fodder for those who did not.

To quote the late, great Denny Green: “They were who we thought they were”.

This film, of course, unites our crude-talking anti-hero, Deadpool (the perfectly cast Ryan Reynolds) with X-Men favorite Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, of course) and together they fight for the continuation of the timeline. What timeline, you ask? Well, this being a “Meta” film with plenty of 4th wall-breaking and self-revelatory jokes, the timeline that is in danger of being destroyed is the (now defunct) 20th Century Fox Films’ X-Men timeline (of which Wolverine is a key piece).

This plot device enables this film to cull Actors and Characters from previous Marvel-type movies, some from Sony, some from 20th Century Fox and some, of course, from the beloved MCU. And…this plot device works well.

As mentioned, Reynolds is perfectly cast as the jovial, fast-talking, always-joking Deadpool and the juxtaposition of this character with the eternally grumpy Wolverine (as portrayed by Jackman) is a nice odd couple pairing. Without spoiling anything, their encounters with other comic book characters along the way are fun with some turning the tables on the characters – and the studios that abandoned them.

Unfortunately, all these cameos (as well as the addition of Wolverine) means that the “Deadpool regulars”, Wolverine’s girlfriend, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), his buddy, Peter (Rob Delaney), the highlight of Deadpool 2, Negasonic Teenage Warrior (Brianna Hildebrand) and, especially, Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) are all sidelined into cameos themselves. While this is understandable, it’s also disappointing as a fan of the first 2 Deadpool films.

Director Shawn Levy (the under-rated Ryan Reynolds film FREE GUY) moves the action along spritely, while also allowing every character that cameos to shine in their brief appearances on the screen. Levy isn’t Directing as he much as he is being the Ringmaster of this Comic Book circus, but he performs that job professionally and efficiently.

Oh…and there are 2 end credits scenes. One during the end credits and one AFTER the end credits and the one that comes AFTER the end credits just might be the best scene in the film. So…stick around for it.

A ton of irreverent fun at the Cineplex.
