The BankofMarquis caught right around 50 films that were released in 2024, here are the Best (and the worst) of them.
As always, let’s add the caveat that these 2024 films have NOT been viewed (yet) by the BankofMarquis, so might make one of these lists someday: THE WILD ROBOT, BIKERIDERS, NOSFERATU, FLO, TWISTERS and LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL.
The Top 10 Films of 2024:
10). THE SUBSTANCE - not many films make me go “WTF” as they conclude. This one did, many, many times.
9). SATURDAY NIGHT - an underrated gem that should have gotten some Oscar love.
8). I’M STILL HERE - A deserving Best Foreign Film Oscar winner.
7). INSIDE OUT 2 - Takes the premise of the first film and “plusses” it to strong results
6). NICKEL BOYS - The biggest, “pleasant” surprise of Oscars 2024 viewing homework.
5). A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE - An origin story that works thanks to the quality performances of Joseph Quinn and the always great Lupita Nyong’o.
4). DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: Delivers exactly what you would expect - and it’s a heckuva lotta fun.
3). CONCLAVE - Surprisingly taught thriller that went “one plot twist too far”.
2). CIVIL WAR - The film that should have gotten more Oscar love (it got none). Alex Garland’s hard look at an America that is thrust into Civil War because of current political rifts is a cautionary tale to see.
1). WICKED - Simply the best. Can’t wait for the sequel in November.
Honorable Mention:
11). GLADIATOR II - No Oscar love for Denzel?!?
12). SING SING - Takes on an added layer of poignance once you realize that most of the performers in the film are actual (or former) inmates of Sing Sing
13). ALIEN: ROMULUS - The 3rd best Alien film (after the first 2)
14). WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL - A sequel to the great Wallace & Gromit short, THE WRONG TROUSERS? Yes, please!
15). THE FALL GUY: Just a lot of fun
And now…THE WORST
10). SALEM’S LOT - Skip this remake and watch the 1980’s mini-series starring David “Starsky & Hutch” Soul.
9). ARGYLLE - It was almost good…until it wasn’t
8). BORDLANDS - Another failed video game film adaptation.
7). VENOM: THE LAST DANCE - One of the best of the Sony “Spider-man Villains” films (which is all they have the rights to). But…that is like saying that Happy is the tallest of the Dwarfs.
6). THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MAGICAL NEGROES - The title is the least problematic portion of this film.
5). THE WATCHERS - A very boring “suspense” film by Ishana Shyamalan, the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan
4). GHOST BUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE - What a waste of a franchise reboot after the successful GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE in 2021.
3). MADAME WEB - Not even CLOSE to the worst film of the year…but it gave a hard run to the title.
2). BEETLEJUCE BEETLEJUICE - From the “unnecessary, 30 years later sequel” department. I hope the performers were paid well for this uninspired cash grab.
1). DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS - A Quentin Tarantino wanna-be action/comedy starring Margaret Qualley (from THE SUBSTANCE) was a solo effort from Ethan Coen that makes one think that, perhaps, Joel Coen was the talented part of the Coen Bros. duo.
And…that’s a wrap on 2024!
You can take all of this to the Bank(ofMarquis)
